The Trial of the Bravest of the Brave

NEY Michel - Twelve contemporary pamphlets and documents regarding his trial

Marshal Ney is probably the most popular of all Napoleon's marshals - he was certainly the most popular with the men who served under him. Napoleon called him "The Bravest of the Brave" and his red hair earned him the nickname Le Lion Rouge.
Honourable, devoted to the welfare of his men - his leadership during the catastrophic retreat from Moscow attests to this - and a brave soldier, he deserved better than his end.
After Waterloo he was court martialled, much to the horror of many of his peers. His wife begged Wellington to intervene, but he refused. Ney was condemned and brought before a firing squad in what is still seen as one of the great miscarriages of justice in French history.
