BARRY Charles - ALS 1839 in support of a building for the "remains of great men"
Charles BARRY (1795-1860)
Autograph Letter Signed (“Charles Barry”) to Henry Driver assuring him of his support in his efforts to provide a building “for the reception of the remains of great men”.
3 pages 8vo, Foley Place, 15 January 1839.
“Having been from home for some days past I am only just forward with your letter of the 31st inst. and an accompanying pamphlet on the propriety of providing a suitable Building in this metropolis for the reception of the remains of all our great men. I entirely agree with you in all the arguments which you have addressed in favour of such a provision and will most cheerfully lend my aid in urging it in influential quarters whenever an opportunity offers and otherwise promoting the object to the utmost of my powers.
In your letter you allude to an accompanying present of a volume published by yourself a short time since bearing upon the subject in question, which upon enquiring I find has been omitted to be left here.”
Charles Barry was responsible for the design or sometimes remodelling of a great many country houses, as well as churches and public buildings, but he will always be remembered as the architect of the Houses of Parliament.
His correspondent, Henry Austin Driver, was determined to build a suitable monument to Lord Byron, but the subject discussed here would imply something more akin to the Pantheon.
The plain red wax seal has been carefully removed from the envelope [not present] and pasted to the bottom of the letter.
