CHARLES X - ALS 1801 while in exile in London
CHARLES X (1757-1836)
Autograph Letter Signed as Comte d’Artois (“Charles Philippe“) to the Marquess of Buckingham, explaining that he is unable to visit him because certain “obligations” force him to remain in London.1½ pages 4o in French with integral blank leaf, London, 20 September 1801.
“It is with true regret the I find myself obliged to postpone the pleasure I would have had in going to see you tomorrow . . . the Baron Rull[?] who is not detained by the same obligations as those which I will explain the reasons which force me to remain in London these days and I am certain that you would approve of them as would the Marchioness of Buckingham.
But that which is deferred will not be lost to me, and I hope that the Baron will be able to bring back to me the assurance that it will not be inconvenient to you to receive me over the first days of next week. . .”
The Comte d’Artois was among the first to leave France after the storming of the Bastille, in an attempt to encourage foreign powers to come to the King’s aid. His efforts were not rewarded with the support he had hoped to find, and he eventually found asylum in Britain, first in Scotland and, from 1799, in England. At the time of writing this letter, he was living in Baker Street.
