DEGAS Edgar - ALS re speaking with Camondo

  • £1,650.00

Edgar DEGAS (1834-1917)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Degas”) to Monsieur Bartholomé [the sculptor, Albert Bartholomé], saying that he had told Camondo what was required.
1 page 8vo in French on a “carte lettre”, n.p. [postmarked Paris], “Vendredi” [date illegible on postmark, but 1890s].
Yes, my dear friend, till tomorrow. We missed you yesterday. I told Camondo what was required. He didn’t say anything. You will no doubt have had a visit from Salle.
Albert Bartholomé was a close friend of Degas. He studied and worked as a painter, but was encouraged by Degas to try his hand at sculpture, in which he proved successful. His Monument to the Dead can today be seen at Père Lachaise.
“Salle” may refer to Mathilde Salle, a dancer whose portrait Degas had painted. He also left a model of Salle’s head which was eventually cast in bronze by Bartholomé after Degas’s death.
Isaac de Camondo, collector and patron of many impressionists and post-impressionists, was a member of the prominent banking family who had left Istanbul for Paris in the 1870s. His inherited wealth allowed him to abandon banking, closing the business in Istanbul, and devote himself to collecting, and giving his time and money to artistic endeavours. His extensive collection of works by Degas is now in the Musée d’Orsay.
His cousin, Moise de Camondo, also devoted himself to artistic pursuits, and left his house, a homage to the Petit Trianon, now known as the Musée Nissim de Camondo, to the French state.
