DICKSON Sir Alexander - ALS 1827 to Francis Freeling about a postal problem

  • £295.00

Sir Alexander DICKSON (1777-1840)

Autograph Letter Signed (“A Dickson”) to Francis Freeling, regarding a packet sent to him by post which may or may not have been of importance.
2 pages 4to with integral blank leaf, Woolwich, 15 May 1827.
On the 7th Inst. a packet by post was presented to me as follows:-
It evidently contained printed papers, was sealed at One end with the post office seal, had Halifax post mark, was addressed to the Adjutant General Royal Artillery Woolwich, it was expressed on the outside to be Votes of Parliament, and the postage charged was £1..1..6.-
As the contents appeared to me to be merely a newspaper or newspapers from America, on which postage had been charged from some informality, I returned the packet not conceiving myself called on to pay for the neglect of others, when, though sent on the public service it was apparently of no Value, but as I have since had reasons to think the contents are on a subject which ought to be submitted to the Master General of the Ordnance, I beg therefore you will have the goodness to cause the packet to be opened and examined and, if found of the description I suppose viz Newspapers or decrees of a provincial Parliament, that you will forward the papers to me, or enclose them to Lieut Col Golset the Master Generals Secretary.”
The letter has been docketed on the verso of the blank leaf indicating that “the packet to be sent to Mr. Freeling / 16th May”.
Sir Alexander Dickson had a distinguished career in the Royal Artillery, serving in the Peninsula, as well as at Waterloo. After the end of the war, he served as a staff officer at Woolwich. Old tape repair to verso of final leaf.
