MONTEUX Pierre - TLS 1922 giving advice to a young musician
Pierre MONTEUX (1875-1964)
Typed Letter Signed (“Pierre Monteux”) to Wilfred L. Tremblay, giving the young man advice on his musical studies.1 page 4to on letterhead of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston, 11 March 1922.
“. . . Your own progress in music is interesting. It seems to me that at sixteen you have made a very good start toward realizing your ambitions. Your amateur orchestra should be an excellent practice instrument. . .
I think you need not be discouraged at your inability to read Wagner’s “Fire-Music” at sight. I know of no conductor who would care to conduct a rehearsal of it without preparatory study.
My suggestion would be that you continue your orchestra, the study of music, - harmony, counterpoint, and Fugue – and that as part of your piano practice you play orchestral scores, beginning with the easy ones.
By close application to such study you cannot fail to increase your musical knowledge and confidence, though, from my own experience, I cannot say that even after many years you will be satisfied that you are “finished”.”
Monteux spent five years as conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, following his first American engagement as conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was also a much respected teacher, and founded a school for conductors and musicians in Maine, who alumnae included André Previn.
In 1913, Monteux found himself at the centre of one of the great scandals of the day when the premiere of the Ballet Russes’s production of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, conducted by Monteux, provoked a near riot with the Parisian audience.
