MUNNINGS Alfred - ALS recommending a German spa

  • £250.00

Alfred MUNNINGS (1878-1959)

Autograph Letter Signed (“AJ Munnings”) to “My dear Phillip”, recommending Dr. Vogler and extolling the pleasures of Bad Ems.
4 pages small 4to in pencil, Bad Ems, n.d., “Thursday” [but 1930s].
This is the case for you. There is one Dr. Vogler. I was taken to him by Lord Mottistone who is here with me - & this doctor is a great fellow & would cure you if you could stay long enough. These waters are right too - & such a nice place & the most wonderful golf course in the world I should say. A beautiful river as wide as the Thames runs through the place & the fine State Kurhauses all along – a band - & concerts not so good – but alright. Sometimes a real army Band of 5th foot & a Trumpeter corps with it. But – the country!! – lovely – the villages!! - & such nice people. 5 miles from the Rhine & Mosel – wine everywhere & wine houses & all. But you mustn’t take it. Vogler tells me whisky is worse than wine for the gout. You want a month here.
Lord Mottistone & daughter & I take great motor tours. I expect you know it all. What is the press doing at home? It’s enough to frighten father from coming to this country. I do hope you haven’t the gout now. . . I took a canoe up the river the other day & went for a swim - the canoe was called Tristan!!”
One of Alfred Munnings’ most important pictures was “General J.E.B. Seely (later Lord Mottistone) on his charger Warrior”. Munnings was renowned for his pictures of horses, and Seely, who had fought in the Boer War, was Commander of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade during the First World War. He was a brave soldier and a friend of Winston Churchill, who may, however, have found Seely’s political judgement deficient when, in the 1930s, he joined the ranks of the appeasers. Seely was created first Baron Mottistone in 1933.
Mottistone and Munnings may well have proved good travelling companions, both solidly establishment figures, and one suspects that Mottistone had as little liking for modern art, as exemplified by Picasso and his contemporaries, as did Munnings.
The letter, written in pencil, has several fold marks and some slight crumpling, but is otherwise in good condition.
