SITWELL Sacheverell - ALS 1974 discussing a gala at the Royal Opera House

  • £110.00

Sacheverell SITWELL (1897-1988)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Sacheverell Sitwell”) to “Dear Dosse” [Philip Dosse, founder of the magazines Dance and Dancers and Books and Bookmen] regarding the publication of “Augustus” [Augustus Hare in Italy, for which Sitwell wrote the introduction] and commenting on a Gala at the Royal Opera House.
1 page oblong 8vo, Weston Hall, Towcester, 23 July 1974.
Thank you so much for your letter.
I take it that if vol. 1 of Augustus appears in October, vol. 2 will not be out till March or April? I hope that is correct. Where we will all be by the heaven only knows! I think it becomes very worrying!!
I’m glad to hear that Dicky Buckle is prospering! He looked resplendent at the Gala Performance, which I enjoyed though Nureyev was more like a mad lion-tamer than ever.
The youngest of the Sitwell siblings, Sacheverell Sitwell was a prolific writer and poet. Augustus Hare, whose writings are referred to here, was a nineteenth century traveller and writer; Sitwell produced the introduction to a collection of some of his writings.
The great dance critic and writer, Richard Buckle, was, in fact, far from well at this time. His precarious health led to his stepping down as the Sunday Times dance critic a year later, though his enthusiasm for dance and his curating of exhibitions remained undimmed.
The Gala at the Royal Opera House mentioned here took place on 17 July as a tribute to Lord Drogheda, who stepped down after seventeen years’ service as Chairman of the Royal Opera House.
