COATES Eric - Two TLSs 1934 regarding a new work

  • £235.00

Eric COATES (1886-1957)

Two Typed Letters Signed ("Eric Coates") to "My dear Robbie", the first regarding a new work on which he was working, the second congratulating his correspondent on a performance of Hansel and Gretel.
1 page small 4to, Chiltern Court NW1, 22 December 1934 and 1 page small 4to, Selsey, Sussex, 30 December 1934.

"I feel I must write to you to say how much we enjoyed Hansel and Gretel yesterday; it really was delightful! And what orchestration!
I am writing this at Selsey, where I have been staying all this week.
I am now well on the way with the last movement of the new Suite; I hope to goodness it will come out all right. I shall be very anxious to know how you will like it.
I shall be back in London tomorrow and on my own for a bit and it would be nice if perhaps you would come and lunch with me; I will 'phone you one day this week to see how you are fixed. . ."
"Robbie" is evidently connected with the BBC, as Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel was broadcast on the Children's Hour by the BBC on 29 December 1934.
The Suite on which Coates was working at the time was undoubtedly his Three Men Suite, which was premiered the following year.
Both letters have been torn from binders, with tears at the filing holes, as well as spindle holes at the top left, but the text and the signature are untouched.
