JOACHIM Joseph - ALS arranging a musical evening
Joseph JOACHIM (1831-1907)
Autograph Letter Signed (“Joseph Joachim”) to “My dear Cracroft” telling him of a musical gathering the following Sunday.2 pages 8vo, n.p. [but London], n.d.
“You will find Mr. Elefanti[?] and the young Count on Sunday at eleven at my rooms for breakfast. I am very much pleased to see that you are not quite deserting us Londoners, and especially that I shall play to you Molique’s Concerto on Monday. I fear there’s no chance of a quartett [sic] rehearsal on Sunday; Pop’s cease until Easter Monday. But Piatti [a London-based cellist] not being back yet, it would not be a treat to play the Trios mentioned. We shall see however what’s to be done in a Musical way.”
Joseph Joachim was a frequent visitor to London from the time of his highly successful debut, playing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in 1844. The affection Londoners felt for Joachim was entirely reciprocated, and he made a great many friends in England. Joachim attended some of Charles Dickens’s readings and was later invited to Gad’s Hill Place. Another acquaintance was Bernard Cracroft. a stockbroker and writer on political affairs as well as a knowledgeable music lover, and he and Joachim remained on friendly terms for some years.
The letter has some show-through, but is entirely legible throughout. There is a brown tape mark at the top left hand corner, not touching the text, and there is a very minor tear at the left margin, most likely due to the removal of the blank leaf.
