MONTGOMERY Bernard Law - ALS 1951 concerning a disagreement in Italy

  • £350.00

Bernard Law MONTGOMERY, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein (1887-1976)

Autograph Letter Signed (“Montgomery of Alamein”) to “My dear Ambassador” [Sir Victor Mallet, Ambassador at Rome], commenting on a letter which had apparently aroused some alarm.
1½ pages 8vo on blue grey paper, Chateau de Courance, Milly, 22 May 1951.
Thank you for your letter of 15th May. I am very glad to know that the lady has got the wind up about it and shows alarm!! I have already written you about what I sent to Marras. I think the matter can now be left alone. But in future I will be more careful as to what I send in writing to volatile peoples!
My kind regards to you all, and please give my love to David.
The recipient of Montgomery’s missive which appears to have caused offence was the Italian General Efisio Marras, who was then the Italian Chief of Defence Staff. When Montgomery published his Memoirs seven years later, his remarks caused considerable offence in Italy, though it is unclear what the content of his letter to General Marras may have been in this instance.
Montgomery enjoyed a warm friendship with Sir Victor and his family; the “David” in question here was Sir Victor Mallet’s young son.
